⚽ You’re Invited to the House of Fútbol - Coming Soon to NYC
ROS has created the ultimate hub to celebrate The Beautiful Game during this World Cup
Years ago, when we were first envisioning the idea of the Religion of Sports, we talked often about the literal parallels between sports and religion: the holy wars, the gods, the relics. Whenever we’d throw around specific examples, almost always those conversations would come back to the FIFA World Cup. To Argentina vs. Brazil. To Maradona. To the Jules Rimet Trophy.
Point is, if you want proof that sports are a religion, you must look no further than a World Cup. I’m sure you’ve experienced it already, just a few days into the tournament: When you are chanting, “I believe that we will win!” in a crowded bar at 1 p.m. it’s like singing a hymn. When you are standing side-by-side with strangers watching, praying, believing in the same result, it’s like listening to a sermon. When you are experiencing something incredible, it’s like witnessing a miracle.
You can find moments of faith anywhere if you search for them—but there’s no better place to worship than in a true cathedral. And since most of us can’t get to Qatar to cheer on the Yanks (or whichever team you support), ROS decided to build one for ourselves.
Welcome to the House of Fútbol
From Nov. 29 to Dec. 4 in New York City, we’ll be opening the House of Fútbol, a multimedia hub for all-things FIFA World Cup. We’ll have watch parties throughout the week on a big screen, and we’ll also host several other events that celebrate “The Beautiful Game,” including a live taping of our podcast In the Moment with David Greene featuring USWNT legend Carli Lloyd.
If you’re in the New York area, don’t miss it; even if you can just pop by for a second, come experience the House of Fútbol for yourself. There are memories from soccer history to explore, original documentaries to watch, and (yes!!!) an ROS-themed craft beer to enjoy. Plus, there are several more surprises that you just have to see for yourself. Here’s a brief schedule:
RSVP using the links below to save your spot—it’s free!
Daily: Join us for one — or many — watch parties.
Tuesday 11/29: Attend a panel discussion on the collision of sports, myth and cinema.
Wednesday 11/30: Listen to a conversation on the rise of the sports doc and how they change the way fans relate to sports or join Religion of Sports and Kicking + Screening for a screening of the best short-form docs that show us why fútbol is religion for so many.
Thursday 12/1: USWNT legend Carli Lloyd stars in a live recording of ROS’ In The Moment podcast with David Greene and later in the evening, David Greene sits down with NPR’s Jasmine Garsd for a look into the new “The Last Cup” podcast that breaks down the rise of the prodigious Lionel Messi.
Friday 12/2: Religion of Sports and industry powerhouses come together for a conversation about the intersection of gender × sport.
If you read this newsletter, you already believe in the power of sports. Now join us to experience that power, together. I really hope you can make it!
One final piece of housekeeping: No normal Friday newsletter this week due to the holiday. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
